A group of Democratic lawmakers under the leadership of California Rep. Adam Schiff has demanded social media companies to censor mis- and disinformation.
Schiff and his colleagues issued this demand in a letter dated Sept. 30. Three of his fellow lawmakers from the Golden State – Reps. Doris Matsui, Julia Brownley and Robert Garcia – affixed their signatures to the letter. Four others – Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson, Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, Indiana Rep. Andre Carson and New York Rep. Dan Goldman – also signed the paper.
The eight Democrats addressed their letter to eight Big Tech executives: Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, X’s Linda Yaccarino, TikTok’s Shou Zi Chew, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, Snapchat’s Evan Spiegel, YouTube’s Neal Mohan and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella.
“We have already seen how posts with disinformation have spread on the major social media platforms both in the U.S. and across the globe during election cycles,” Schiff and his colleagues wrote. “We continue to be concerned with each of your companies’ ability to react efficiently and effectively to misinformation and disinformation, or to any potential incitement of violence occurring on your platforms.”
In their letter, the Democrats took offense to social media companies “cutting their trust and safety teams” and “terminating employees handling election integrity.” They also pointed out that these same companies reinstated former President Donald Trump after he allegedly violated the platforms’ community standards.
“While the impetus of this letter is the 2024 election, political and election-related mis- and disinformation persists even between elections. We are also urging your companies to commit to taking action on election and political misinformation year-round, not just in the leadup to elections.”
Reclaim The Net commented on the letter by Schiff and his colleagues, noting that “the Democrats continue with their sustained efforts to pressure major social media platforms – now about a month ahead of the presidential election.”
“Schiff’s turn is to ‘demand action’ from companies behind social media. The demand is this: Disclose what plans these companies with the most influence and reach in the online space have to counter what the congressman and his colleagues consider to be the spread of mis- and disinformation.”
The outlet also mentioned that while the California congressman’s letter makes mention of “attacks on our democracy,” it does not clarify whether “repeated attempts to assassinate a candidate” – Trump in this case – “count as ‘incitement of violence.'” Moreover, Schiff’s letter asserts that these social media firms have all “rolled back” their previous election policies.
While the Democrats are doubling down on censorship, the news outlet pointed out that Republicans – particularly the House Judiciary Committee (HJC) under the chairmanship of U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) – are pushing back against it. The HJC is trying to shed light on how the White House and government agencies pressured and then colluded with, major social media platforms during the previous campaigns and elections – all in the name of supposedly combating “misinformation.”
Jordan’s committee appears to have had visible successes in this endeavor. The most recent of these achievements is Zuckerberg admitting his regret for succumbing to government pressure on censorship issues. (Related: Zuckerberg claims he ‘regrets’ censoring Americans under ‘pressure’ from Biden-Harris admin.)
“I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it,” the Meta CEO wrote in a letter from late August. “I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today.”
“Like I said to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any administration in either direction. We’re ready to push back if something like this happens again,” Zuckerberg added.
Reclaim The Net ultimately remarked: “The revelations that the government and Big Tech colluded to usher in unprecedented levels of censorship in the past continues to be tested in the courts as well.”
