More than 10,000 abortions were prevented in the first two months following the overturn of the Roe v. Wade abortion ruling, according to a report.
An Oct. 30 report by the FiveThirtyEight (FTE) statistical analysis website showed that “in two months after the Supreme Court decision [on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization], there were 10,670 fewer abortions as compared to pre-Dobbs estimates.” The Dobbs ruling, which stated that the U.S. Constitution does not grant a right to abortion, effectively overturned the 1973 Roe ruling and the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision.
The FTE analysis of abortion rates in all 50 states following the Roe overturn revealed that in states with pro-life laws, abortion rates dropped if not became zero entirely. In contrast, abortion rates in states without bans on the practice saw an uptick.
It found that the number of abortions in many states in the South and the Midwest fell to zero, while states bordering the two regions – such as Kansas, Colorado, North Carolina and Montana – saw an increase in the number of abortions.
“Even before the Dobbs ruling, getting an abortion was often an arduous, time-consuming and expensive process – particularly in southern and midwestern states that passed hundreds of restrictions on abortion in the past decade,” the FTE piece pointed out. Citing research and policy organization Guttmacher Institute, the article stated that at least 66 abortion clinics closed between the June 2022 ruling and the end of October.
Moreover, both North Dakota and South Dakota experienced a 100 percent drop in abortion rates two months after the high court decision. The only abortion clinic in North Dakota moved to neighboring Minnesota, causing a 14 percent increase in the number of abortions in the North Star State.
In a surprising twist, pro-abortion state California only saw a one percent increase in its abortion rate even though neighboring state Arizona recorded a 53 percent decline in abortions in the two months after the June 2022 Supreme Court ruling. A trigger law banning abortion took effect in the Grand Canyon State after the high court overturned Roe. In contrast, the Golden State announced plans to become an abortion sanctuary. Several pro-life activists took to social media to react to FTE’s findings.
“An incredible number,” said Michael Knowles of the Daily Wire. “In just two months, 10,000 human beings were rescued from slaughter because five [Supreme Court justices] had courage.” Knowles pertained to the five conservative magistrates – Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett – who voted to overturn the Roe abortion ruling.
Daily Signal senior reporter Mary Margaret Olohan, meanwhile, wrote: “New data indicates that 10,000 babies made it!”
Lila Rose, founder and president of pro-life group Live Action, praised the report as “amazing” in a tweet. She continued: “At least 10,000 lives have been saved since the overturning of Roe. Pro-life laws stop abortions and save lives.”
The FTE piece also mentioned that “if these trends persist, there could be at least 60,000 fewer abortions in the next year as a result of the Dobbs decision.”
However, pro-life advocates cannot rest on their laurels just yet as chemical abortions appear to be the next battleground in safeguarding the rights of babies yet to enter this world.
LifeSiteNews pointed out that illegal chemical abortions are on the rise following the Roe overturn. It cited an article by the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post about an underground network of abortion pill suppliers who send abortifacients to pregnant women “without the safeguards of medical oversight.” Planned Parenthood, meanwhile, announced plans to roll out a “mobile abortion clinic” for distributing abortifacients in an RV that can be parked at the borders of pro-life states. The abortion group added that the mobile abortion clinic could later offer surgical abortions.
